These are the 39 domains which are defined in TRIZ as being sources of contradiction. Most inventions are about solving contradictions.

Contradictions occur between two items in the table below. One item is what you are seeking and the other is something that is getting in the way.

For example, to make a car accelerate faster, you may put in a bigger engine, but the weight of the engine reduces its performance. This is a contradiction between power (which you want) and weight (which you do not want).

Appendix B describes how to use this with the contradiction matrix.

Weight of moving object
Weight of non-moving object
Length of moving object
Length of non-moving object
Area of moving object
Area of non-moving object
Volume of moving object
Volume of non-moving object
Speed
Force
Tension/pressure
Shape
Stability of object (resistance to change)
Strength
Durability of moving object
Durability of non-moving object
Temperature
Brightness
Energy spent by moving object
Energy spent by non-moving object
Power
Waste of energy
Waste of substance
Loss of information
Waste of time
Amount of substance
Reliability
Accuracy of measurement
Accuracy of manufacturing
Harmful factors acting on object
Harmful side-effects
Ease of manufacture
Ease of use
Ease of repair
Adaptability (to external conditions)
Complexity of device
Complexity of control
Level of automation
Productivity
